A walk down memory lane... in Swinton
BACK in 1985 May Kinghorn, then the post-mistress for Swinton in Berwickshire, organised a fascinating local history exhibition in the village hall. Objects and photographs were borrowed from local people and and put on display for 10 days.
Afterwards May kept copies of the best photographs but the objects, memorabilia and costumes were all returned to the lenders.
Now, 27 years on, May Kinghorns's photographs are a wonderful record of life in Swinton from the 1880s to the 1960s. She has very kindly allowed Scottish Borders Council's (SBC) museum service in Duns to make copies of the whole collection so they can be used and appreciated by generations to come.
Many different themes are covered including village life, shops and businesses, wartime, festivals and celebrations.
If anyone has any further information about the history of Swinton or if you would like to see the May Kinghorn collection please make an appointment with the museum office by telephoning 01361 884114.
