Galashiels businesswoman owes £1800 in parking fines
A 34-YEAR-OLD woman who amassed more than £1800 worth of parking tickets over the past four years has been ordered to attend court every month until they are repaid.
Deborah Hunter, whose address was previously given as Glenmayne, Galashiels, admitted failing to pay 43 outstanding fines when her case called at the Justice of the Peace Court in Selkirk on Thursday.
She blamed her estranged husband for accumulating some of the tickets in her vehicle which date back to 2007.
The self-employed businesswoman, who has since been banned from driving after being diagnosed with epilepsy, had previously offered to repay the fines at £20 a week. But the court heard £1885 remained outstanding this week.
Hunter's solicitor Matt Patrick said his client would now offer to pay the fines at £50 per month - if the court waived payment on some of the fines. However, his motion was rejected.
Justice of the Peace Margaret McVitie ordered Hunter to attend court each month until the fine was paid, starting on February 23. She said: "I will not remit some of the fines. This has gone on far too long and the court is fed up with her (Hunter's) behaviour."
