THE army were called into action in the Borders at the weekend.

Soldiers from the Territorial Army Centre in Galashiels were travelling back from an exercise at Barry Budden near Dundee when they came across a car on fire on the A7 south of Stow on Sunday around 3.30pm.

They were caught in queuing traffic as the vehicle, which came to a stop on a sweeping bend near the notorious Boland junction, blocked one lane of the carriageway and forced the closure of the road.

However, with some motorists opting to turn back, quick-thinking Sergeant Jim Lawrie offered to redirect traffic around the scene of the blaze until police arrived - allowing the road to reopen.

He was supported by Privates Jim Johnston and Niall Cameron, who are currently training to deploy to Afghanistan later this year.

Praising their actions this week, Police Constable Steven Irvine told the Border Telegraph: "We are very grateful for the assistance of the TA on this occasion.

"This is a great example of the uniformed services working together." And he added: "It helped minimise the risk of further accidents."

Firefighters from Galashiels were called out to extinguish the fire after the alarm was raised. It is believed an electrical fault may have been to blame for the blaze.
