A 28-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with vandalism following damage to a local landmark.

The Hawick 1514 Monument, also known as the Hawick Horse, which plays a central role in the town's historic Common Riding celebrations, was allegedly damaged over the weekend of November 18 to 21 last year.

And police launched an investigation.

Inspector Paula Clark said: "There has been a great deal of anger expressed from local community groups and members of the public and it was important that we acted quickly to provide re-assurance to the local community that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.

"The efforts of my officers as well as the assistance of the public and the media cannot be underestimated, and I am pleased that we can now bring this incident to a close."
