Local RBS Rugby Rep Lorna Messer presents the award to Sarah Calder at The Greenyards.

SCOTTISH Rugby and RBS are delighted to announce today that Sarah Calder of Melrose Rugby Club is the RBS Club Volunteer of the Month for January.

Sarah who has been the mini convener at the club for the last 18 month has seen a 30% increase in player numbers since she started, making her responsible for over 210 children on a weekly basis.

She said: "I'm humbled to be acknowledged for the work I do at Melrose, I never did it for recognition. I originally put my hand up to help out because I saw how much my two boys loved playing rugby and being involved with the club.

"It's been brilliant to see the mini section grow so much, we need to keep providing a good service for these youngsters and make sure we maintain and grow the numbers.

"I love the job, somebody needs to do it and I'm delighted to be the one that does."

Overseeing the thriving mini rugby section carries huge responsibility. In her role Sarah oversees the ten person mini committee, organises roughly 50 coaches taking the indoor winter training arrangements under her wing, and organising various fundraising initiatives to get kit for the under-16 team. As well as organising barbeques and car washes she approached the local bus firm, Austin Travel, who helped fund the kit.

Another of her key responsibilities is organising the 100th Melrose Junior 7s tournament to take place next year.

Melrose club president, John Reed, said: "Sarah has vision and is a positive ideas person. She is a pleasure to work alongside as she gives wholeheartedly to the mini section."

Sarah will receive a table at the annual Scottish Rugby Club Awards Dinner at Murrayfield where she will be in with a chance of winning the RBS Club Volunteer of the Season award. The dinner will take place on Friday 25 May 2012. Places are now available to book at the reduced price of £35 per head, call 0131 346 5250.
