MELROSE Provost William Windram has warned the closure of the town's youth hostel could have an impact on local shops and businesses.

Last year, we revealed The Scottish Youth Hostel Association announced plans to close its hostels at Broadmeadows near Selkirk, Yetholm and Melrose.

It cited financial difficulties and low visitor numbers as the reason for the closures.

Mr Windram, chairman of Melrose and District Community Council, said: "We have protested but they are not going to change their mind.

"I was surprised the number of people using it was not higher and I think the impact on the businesses in the town will be felt."

The meeting heard a private operator has offered to take over the running of the closure threatened youth hostel in Kirk Yetholm.

However, community councillors claimed the Melrose site could be sold off for sheltered housing or a new school.

Mr Windram said careful consideration would have to be given to the site because it falls within the Melrose Abbey conservation area.
