'Experiment' to liven up Gala Sevens
GALA Sevens tournament next April is to have a major makeover.
Twelve teams will compete in a revised structure which will see four leagues of three teams. Each club will be guaranteed at least two games, with the four league winners competing in the semi finals.
The Gala sports will open the spring season on Saturday, April 7, and, in another major change with tradition, the tournament will not start until 4pm.
Gala President George Marshall said that the changes were intended to bring some fresh thinking to the traditional sports.
"We may well have our first ever floodlit Sevens final, depending on weather conditions. And we will have hospitality and entertainment events in the earlier afternoon.
"This is very much an experiment intended to liven up the formula which we have been using for more than a century."
Invitations will be issued later this year and it is likely that seeding will be used in the draw for the leagues.
As the opening tournament in the 2012 Kings of the Sevens competition the Gala event will set the tone for the remaining events.
Points to count towards the Kings of the Sevens title will be awarded on placings in the four leagues, the semi-final and the final.
The changes to the 121st Gala sevens have been agreed by the Border League, which oversees the Kings of the Sevens competition.
