BRINGING Bank Street out of the shadows is the mission of Galashiels community groups.

And this week they had beaming smiles as the lights finally shone on the town centre fountain.

Community Council chairman Bill White and Ian Purvis from Gala Waterways inspected the shining example of their work. Mr White told the Border Telegraph: "The fountain lights have been needed for some time. We were keen to get the fountain brightened up and it is just one area of many that we want to enhance around Bank Street and the town centre.

"Once the bypass work is completed we hope there will be many further improvements."

Cash from pay parking was used for the fountain illuminations. Local councillor Sandy Aitchison is pleased the money is being put to good use. He added: "Galashiels pay parking also paid for the new fence at Bank Street Gardens. It is good to know the money is being put to good effect."
